Why Our Soap?

All Natural • Vegan • Biodegradable • Non-Toxic • Paraben Free • Cruelty Free • No Detergents, Phosphates or Sulfates

Tuxedo Soap is made the old-fashioned way from scratch, using excellent ingredients like olive and coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, castor oil, palm kernel oil, herbs, plant essential oils and quality phthalate-free fragrances. The soap is hand-cut and cured for three weeks.

The soap gently cleanses and softens your skin, and produces a fluffy luxurious lather.

Our soap retains all of the natural moisturizing glycerin often removed from mass-produced soap. While glyerin is beneficial to your skin, the presence of glycerin can cause the soap to get soft if it is left in water. For maximum life span please allow this soap to dry out completely between uses – a “soap saver” is ideal for this purpose.

The Soap Making Process

All soaps are made using the traditional cold process method and are produced in small batches with high-quality oils to make nourishing products.

Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye, is an essential ingredient in the soap-making process. When sodium hydroxide is mixed with a liquid, a lye solution is created. This solution, when mixed with fats and oils, will cause a chemical reaction called saponification, which completely combines the ingredients to form beautiful handmade soap.

Yes, it does contain glycerin, because whenever you make soap, glycerin is produced as a natural by-product of the chemical reaction between oils and lye.  What most people call glycerin soap is actually a prepared detergent or soap base clarified with alcohol and sugar.  That kind of soap is also known as “melt & pour” soap because the artisan can melt it, scent it, and pour it into molds.  Some of it can mimic traditional soap and it can be very artistic.

Our Ingredients

Our soap is handcrafted with a skin-loving blend of oils and butters including Fair Trade organic shea butter, organic cocoa butter, organic palm kernel oil and sustainably-sourced palm oil (see below).

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet Almond Oil is an excellent emollient and is known for its ability to soften and re-condition the skin. It is rich in proteins, olein glyceride linoleic acid and Vitamin D, and is considered extremely nourishing.

Olive Oil

For centuries olive oil has treated wounds, minor burns, eczema, and psoriasis. Antibacterial, high in fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, it is a mild and restorative oil.

Organic Shea Butter

Shea Butter is hailed for its protecting and emollient properties. It has high amounts of unsaponifiable matters, vitamin E and other natural active elements, and is a perfect natural moisturizing agent for the skin.

Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is excellent as a skin moisturizer and softener

Organic Cocoa Butter

This fragrant butter is obtained from the organically grown fruit of the cocoa tree (Theobroma Cocoa).

Palm Oil (*RSPO Cert.)

Palm Oil is derived from the fruit of the palm tree and is considered to be rich in palmitic acid, vitamin E, vitamin K and magnesium. It is said to be a natural source of anti-oxidant and works great in soap making.

*In response to the growing concerns over the deforestation of the rainforest and non-regulated expansion, producers and users of palm oil formed the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The goal of this group is to develop a strategy, guidelines, and even an inspection and certification system for palm plantations throughout the world. The objective is to be able show that these certified palm plantations are, in fact, sustainable and not practicing deforestation so as to expand their productivity. Our Palm Oil comes from approved supplier of palm oil products who are members of RSPO.

Organic Palm Kernel Oil

This oil comes from the kernel of the fruit and is widely used in soap making to give great lather. It is also used to harden soaps and aid soap formulas to saponify quickly. Palm Kernel Oil has moisturizing and skin softening properties.

Castor Seed Oil

This oil is used in soap making mainly for its lather making abilities. In addition to wonderful lather, the conditioning and moisturizing properties that it adds is a great bonus.

Rice Bran Oil

Rice Bran Oil is extracted from the bran or outer coat of the brown rice grain removed during the milling process. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential oils. It also has a high percentage of fatty acids and unsaponifiables and is one of the best sources of tocotrienols, an antioxidant that may be much more powerful and effective than Vitamin E.

Essential Oils and Fragrances

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled (most often by steam or water) from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or other elements of aromatic plants. When inhaled, they trigger the Central Nervous System. Essential oils help to balance emotions to some degree and are known for their stimulating, uplifting, and relaxing properties.

Essential Oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.
